North Central High School Upward Bound students participated in the annual Upward Bound field trip on May 5, 1998. The group traveled by chartered bus to Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas. At the Discovery Pyramid students viewed science and space exploration exhibits where they were able to interact with various displays such as driving a Mars Rover. Afterwards students were immersed in an underwater world at the Imax Theater.
Before heading for home, students visited the Rain Forest Pyramid where tropical birds and butterflies flew about freely. They were able to observe rain forest plants including many varieties of palms, orchids, and banana trees. The winding path through the jungle crossed over streams with large tropical fish, koi, and archer fish. It lead into a cave containing several varieties of bats and it passed by a stream where Scarlet Ibis were feeding and pruning themselves. Nearby, in the Insect House, students observed unusual insects of the rain forest. Upon returning to school they were asked to write an essay describing their experiences and what they had learned.
