A Change of Mind
      by Byrd Adams

It was a lovely summer morning in June. The day looked as if it would be
perfect, or at least that was what I thought. I, on the other hand, was feeling rather
depressed because I did not make the girls' basketball team. The only reason I could
think of was my size. I hated being short.

Around midday a mysterious mist came up out of nowhere. It seemed to
settle directly over my house. I stepped off my porch and stood there staring at it for
well over five minutes. Something inside me suggested that someone or
something was watching me. Soon it began to disburse. The sky then returned to a
mystic blue. As I turned to go back inside, my steps began to grow shorter and
slower. I grew tired and decided to take a quick nap.

I must have slept for hours, for when I awoke I was in a strange, new place or
was it? Everything was enormous. Nothing in the room was my size. As I sat up, I
noticed that I no bigger than a match stick. I felt as if I were playing the role of
Thumberlina. I was hysterical. What had happened to me? What evil curse had I
fallen under? I pinched myself to see if I was dreaming. Ouch! I wasn't. How was I
ever going to return to my normal self. I knew of the only person who could have
done this to me, the evil goblin in the nearby woods. My only hope was to go to the
woods and find the place where the goblin dwelled. But first I had to get down off
the sofa. Luckily, there was a loose thread that I was able to climb down.

Once I was outside, I had to figure out a way to get to the goblin's home. I
noticed the goblin's cat and decided to hitch a ride with him. So through the woods
we traveled until we came to the part with an overbearing odor of that same
mysterious mist that had settled over my house earlier. I got off the cat and crept
inside. After looking around, I came across a potion on the top shelf that read "Self-
growth Formula." All I had to do was get to it and drink it. Just before I could reach
the shelf, the goblin came in. He began to sniff around. I thought maybe he had
sensed my presence, but minutes later he had disappeared down the stairwell. Then
I slowly wedged the cork off the bottle. I became faced with another problem. How
was I going to drink from the potion? So I did the first thing that came to my mind,
I jumped in the bottle, seeing that this was my only choice. Minutes later I dizzily
climbed out of the bottle. My knees began to wobble, and I began to hiccup. With
every hiccup I grew a inch, one after another until finally I was my original size
again. Astonished by my sudden recovery, I forgot all about the goblin who was on
his way back up the stairwell. I panicked, unable to move, but somehow I must
have because when I returned to my senses, I was only a few feet from my house. I
had never been happier to see it. From that moment on, I never complained about
my size.
