An Interview with Pocohontas

by Stephanie Ducote

Today I am interviewing Pocahontas. She will discuss her life and family with us .
"Hi, I'm Stephanie Ducote from North Central High School," I said, "I was asked to interview someone from history for a dialogue."
"What's your name?" I asked curiously.
"My name is Pocahontas." she answered politely.
"What is your father's name?" I asked.
"His name is Powhatan. He is the chief of the Native American Indians." she answered.
"Do you have any sisters or brothers? Or are you an only child?" I asked.
Pocahontas answered, "No, I have twelve sisters and brothers all together." I asked,"What does your name mean to the Indians?"
She answered excitedly,"It means playful one."
"I understand you got married at a young age," I asked,"how old were you?"
"I was twelve." she answered.
"Who did you marry?" I asked.
Pocahontas answered,"I married a chief from my tribe in 1612."
I asked,"Did you'll stay married?
She answered with a smile,"No, I later fell in love with John Rolfe and we married in the year 1614."
"Were you ever coverted to Christianity or baptized?" I asked.
"Yes, in the year 1613 I was converted to Christianity and baptized with the name Rebecca," she answered.
"After you married, where did you and your English husband move?" I asked her.
"We moved to London, where we could start a good life together," she said in a daze.
"What did the English think of you?" I asked.
"They thought of me as an Indian princess." she answered with a big smile and glowing eyes.
"Did you have any kids?" I asked.
She answered,"Yes, I had a wonderful little boy named Thomas."
"I understand you saved a man's life," I asked,"did you?"
"Oh yeah! His name was John Smith. He was a captain, a leader of the settlers in Jamestown." she said with amazed eyes.
"How did you save his life?" I questioned curiously.
"Well, in the year 1608 my father was about to kill him with a stone war club, and I placed my head upon his and begged my father to spare his life." she said.
"Thank you for your time. It was very nice talking to you and learning more about you. My school will be very thrilled to read the conversation we have had." I replied with politeness and appreciation.
As she stood up to show me to the door, she said,"It was nothing. Some visit me anytime. I'm glad I could help."
Now it is the year 1617 and I have found out that our friend Pocahontas has died of smallpox. She was buried in the chapel of the parish church in Gravesend, England. We will remember her as our beloved Indian "princess".
