VILLE PLATTE The North Central Hurricanes brought their brooms to Sacred Heart Friday night. With a 77-42 win over the Trojans, the Hurricanes swept through their District 5-lA season without a loss.
The champion Hurricanes are 14-0 in district. North Central has been unbeaten since starting the season with a 1-13 record.
The Trojans dropped to 5-9 in league play. North Central head coach Butch Fontenot said the perfect district record was one of his team s goals for the season.
It was our goal to go undefeated in district, said Fontenot. We have accomplished out first goal, and our next is going to the Big Dance.
I tried to play some younger guys because our bench will help in the playoffs. We have the right chemistry for the playoffs. Im not afraid to go to the bench for kids like Jamie Tanner. Eric Blueitt has also been playing well off the bench. Depth is one of our best weapons.
When we started district, our record was 1-13, and I was worried about the kids being down. I kept preaching when we are apples to apples we would be okay, and I was right. Fontenot sees a few things he wants to work on before the playoffs.
We can do a little better job on our zone press. Our guys were out of position some times, but you expect that to happen sometimes.
Sacred Heart coach Jason Jagneaux said the Trojans did not meet his expectations.
I am disappointed with the season, said Jagneaux. I had high expectations going into this season. District was a roller coaster. We played close games, and we let some easy ones get away. I guess inexperience caught up at the end of some of the games.
I had five juniors that received a lot of playing which should help us next year. Scott (Pellerin) has averaged 20-21 points per game, and Spencer (Launey) is a good point guard. It will be tough moving to (Class) 2A, but we have a good future ahead of us.
North Central quickly took the lead in the first quarter, and led by 10 going into the second period. The Hurricanes steadily built on the lead and went up by 17 at halftime, 42-25.
In the fourth quarter, the Canes outscored the Trojans 20-5 to extend the lead to 35 and take an easy victory.
Scott Pellerin scored 22 for Sacred Heart despite the attempts by North Central to shut him down. Pellerin led the Trojans in scoring.
He had two twos, five threes, and three-of- four from the foul line.Derrick Tezeno led for the Hurricanes with 14. Tezeno hit five field goals and shot four- of-six from the line.
