North Central's Derrick Tezeno again proved that he could run with the big dogs as he led the 1-A Hurricanes past the 5-A Tigers at OHS.

Tezeno lead all scorers with 23 points, but it was his closing shots at the free throw line that proved to be the difference in a hard-fought contest.

The Tigers held at slim 47- 46 lead with 24 ticks remaining in the boys' final, then Tezeno was sent to the foul line for three straight trips.

He hit four-of-six attempts to give the Hurricanes a 51-46 margin.

With four seconds left, Patrick Scott drove the lane to pull the Tigers back within three, 51-48.

But two ticks later, 'Cane shooter Otis Fontenot sealed the win with two points at the charity stripe,

"They were fighting the clock and they became erratic," North Central head coach Butch Fontenot said of the Tigers foes. "Im afraid we would do the same thing

"Derrick scored a lot of points," Fontenot continued, "but we had other guys make good decisions on the floor tonight."

"We have some young guys that need to learn to calm down and p1ay in some tight situations, OHS head coach Jamie Rollins said after the contest. "They didn’t miss their fouls shots at the end. And we missed. We were shooting air balls in the clutch."

The first quarter seemed to set the stage for the entire contest as the two teams tied 8-8.

Edward Henry scored the first and last Tiger points of the quarter. After the OHS defense tightened around Tezeno’s first basket, Patrick Aaron used the open court for six of his eight points on the night.

The two teams continued the battle into the second period before the Hurricanes managed a four-point halftime lead.

North Central was able to go to the locker room ahead 23-19 as Gaines converted a three point play with 17 ticks left.

A pair of shots by Trev Arvie pulled the Tigers within a point, 30-29 in the third quarter. The Hurricanes regrouped to spread the margin to 36-31 aided by a put back in at the buzzer by Gaines, which began the fourth quarter fireworks.
