Hurricanes down OC

LEBEAU - Rebounding after a district loss is unfamiliar for the North Central Lady Hurricanes.

The Lady Hurricanes lost Friday night to Point Coupee Central, but North Central regrouped to defeat Opelousas Catholic, 50-26.

The win improved the Lady Hurricanes to 24-7 overall and 12-1 in district. OC fell to 18-12 on the year and 8-5 in district.

"Coach Shamsie did a good job of taking our primary players," North Central head coach Vanessa Taylor said. "But it also allowed some of our players to step up.

"But we did a good job, we had a three point edge early on then we came out and and played our game."

Brittany Butler and Alicia Edwards scored on layups, but Adrienne Gerace rebounded with two layups for the Lady Vikes.

Donisha Durisseau made a three-pointer for North Central as they had a three point edge.

Rebecca Hanna made a bucket to open the OC second quarter, but the North Central defense stiffened to only allow the Lady Vikings to 8 points for the quarter.

Durisseau had five points and Deseria Offord led with six points for the quarter as North Central grabbed a 28-12 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, North Central held OC to a Rebecca Hanna three point shot.

But the OC defense did well also did well in forcing more turnovers and only eight points.

Offord scored five more points and Alicia Edwards followed with a layup to increase the Lady Cane score to 36-15.

In the final quarter the Lady Vikes offense finally went back to work as Dana Hayes scored six of the final 11 points for OC.

Valencia Harris led the Lady Canes with six points for the quarter.

At the end of the game all the seniors were presented with flowers for Senior Day.

Offord had 11 points, Jannah Mason and Durisseau each had 10 points for North Central.

"We played well early," OC head coach Tara Shamsie said. "We changed things up a little and they adjusted to it.

"We are not playing the way we use to. We need to play better now, because it is like now or never for us because if we do not play the way we need to it may be too late come playoff time."
Hurricanes storm past Opelousas Catholic

LEBEAU - The Opelousas Catholic Vikings the lead at halftime, but North Central exploded in the second half for a 60-45 District 7-2A win.

With the win, North Central improves to 20-10 on the year and 8-2 in district. OC drops to 10-15 overall and 4-5 in district.

"If anyone would have asked me if we would have the record we have right now, I would have never would have believed it," North Central head coach Butch Fontenot said of his young team. "I am really proud of this team, they are playing well.I hope we can keep this up, because next year we can be even better."

The Hurricanes started out with a 6-0 run as Erick Coleman, Curtis Andrus, and Marcus Louis pushed in buckets.

The Vikings responded with a 8-3 run, led by Quentin Richard's six points. The Hurricanes held a 9-8 advantage at the end of the quarter.

The two teams battled for control in the second quarter as Seth Daigle scored four points as OC grabbed its first lead.

Errick Coleman made back-to back-three pointers to help North Central retake the lead.

Quentin Richard made a 3-point shot and Tim Taylor added two foul shots to give OC a 22-20 lead at intermission.

The Hurricane defense limited OC to six points in the third quarter, with Kyle Comeaux hitting a long 3-pointer for the Vikings.

Kennard Tanner and Marcus Louis helped the Hurricanes grab a 36-28 lead as the game moved to the final period.

North Central outscored OC 24-17 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

OC was led by Quentin Richard's nine points in the quarter, including two 3-pointers. The Hurricanes were led by Marcus Louis' 12 points in the period.

Quentin Richard scored 18 points in the contest to lead OC.

Marcus Louis led the Canes with 23 points and Errick Coleman added 10 "We did good to get the halftime lead," OC head coach Matt Citron said. "But then they made their changes and it was hard to stop them after that.

"I told the team at the break that that team will not give up, and they did not.

"They are better than us, but I am very proud of my team for their effort in the game," Citron said.
North Central's Louis earns top player honors

Marcus Louis scored 26 points Friday night to help North Central grab a 82-71 win over Livonia. Friday's performance topped Tuesday's outing when he scored 24 points in the Hurricanes' 60-45 win over Opelousas Catholic.

For his efforts, Louis is named Daily World Player of the Week for Feb. 8 to 15.

Orlando Wheeler pushed in 31 points to lead Church Point to a 68-52 victory over Notre Dame.

Harry Coward scored 28 points to lead Eunice to a 57-45 win over Sam Houston.

The same night, Ashley Edwards poured in 26 points as the Lady Bobcats downed Sam Houston, 51-42.

Renada Edwards scored 25 points to lead the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs to a 64-44 win over Iota. She also pushed 18 points in Friday's 66-54 loss to Rapides.

Jasmine Lewis scored 25 points in Beau Chene's 67-47 loss to Northside.

Trivinski Williams poured in 22 points and Kevin Richardson added 21 points as Ville Platte slipped past Iota, 68-65.

Besides Louis' 26-point performance against Livonia, Hurricane teammates Eric Coleman added 24 points and Kennard Tanner chipped in 21 points in the win.

Brian Stelly poured in 21 points to direct Acadiana Prep to a 42-28 win over Pecan Island.

Quinten Richard scored 18 points for Opelousas Catholic in the Vikings' loss to North Central on Tuesday.

On Friday, Richard poured in 28 points to lead OC to a 63-49 victory over Westminster Christian Academy.

Randall Bulliard scored 19 points to lead the Crusaders.

Chris Keys pushed in 20 points in a 69-49 losing effort as Jeanerette downed Port Barre.

Phil Charles scored 20 points in Beau Chene's 109-68 loss to Northside.

Lady Hurricane teammates Donisha Duriusseau and Brittney Butler each scored 18 points to lift North Central to a 62-19 win over Livonia.

With the win, North Central earned a share of the District 7-2A championship.

Yolanda Andrus pushed in 18 points to lead Port Barre to a 44-26 win over the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau.

Damorous Offord scored 17 points as Northwest earned a 41-40 win over Rayne.

Lady Raider Wendy Hayes pushed in 17 points as Northwest cruised to a 51-37 win over Rayne.

Justin Payne and Kennon Lamb each scored 17 points in Opelousas High's 63-56 loss to St. Martinville.

Erica Fontenot scored 17 of Mamou's 22 points in the Lady Demons' 65-22 loss to Iota.
