Durrisseau lands top honors

GRAND COTEAU - The North Central Lady Hurricanes remain undefeated in District 7-2A action with a pair of strong wins last week.

Tuesday, Donneshia Durisseau scored 11 points in North Central's 68-24 win over Livonia. On Friday, Durisseau got the hot hand and pushed in 23 points to lead the Lady Hurricanes to a 94-25 win over the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau.

For her effort, Durisseau was selected the Daily World Player of the Week for Jan. 18 to 24.

North Central sweeps Port Barre in district action

LEBEAU - North Central swept Port Barre Tuesday night to keep pace for District 7-2A championships for the Lady Hurricanes and the Hurricane teams.

The Lady Hurricanes (19-6, 9-0) defeated the Lady Devils (2-17, 2-8) in a 54-28 decision.

"We played well tonight," Lady Hurricane head coach Vanessa Taylor said. "I gave my backups a chance to play and get more game experience. It gave my starters a chance to rest up a little. I was very pleased with my teams play."

The Lady Canes took control early as for a 16-4 margin at the end of the first quarter and then Floydiece Washington scored 16 points in the second quarter as North Central led 37-8 at the half. North Central kept its domination in the third period for a 47-13 advantage as the reserves finished the game for the Lady Hurricanes.

North Central's Washington finished with18 points to lead all scorers.

"I have some starters out," Lady Devil head coach Connie Thierry said. "I am using seventh and eighth graders. We still have a long way to go. But I was very pleased with how they played. It was very

In the boys game, the Hurricanes rolled past Port Barre, 73-48. With the win, North Central improved to 17-9 overall and 5-1 in district, while the Devils dropped to 3-20 on the year and 2-4 in district.

"We are doing well. We are down two players, and are still putting up good numbers. I am very impressed with that," Hurricane head coach Butch Fontenot said. "We are still making silly mistakes though."

The Hurricanes opened with a 9-0 run directed by Errick Coleman, Nason Lamb and Kennard Tanner.

Then the Devils would get on the board on two buckets from Josh Thomas and Everett Martin. North Central's Marcus Louis scored seven more points to push the Hurricanes ahead, 20-5.

Jamaal Andrus shot up a three pointer and Josh Thomas hit a layup for the Red Devils to begin the second quarter.

Lennox Bates hit a pair of three pointers and Tanner added seven points to help the Hurricanes roll in the period. North Central mounted a 24-16 run for the quarter for a 44-21 lead at the half.

Tanner and Louis both scored 9 points in the third period for the Hurricanes, while Thomas' 5 points and Ryan Robin's four points closed the gap to 62-35.

Louis finished with 24 points and Tanner added 18 points for the Hurricanes. Thomas had 16 points and Martin had 11 points for the Red Devils in the game.

"We are having a hard time," Devil head coach William Davis. "We are missing (Chris) Keys, but we can still play. Keys is out with a stress fracture.

"We are getting better. We are playing disciplined basketball," Francis said.

North Central travels to Westminster Friday while Port Barre entertains Opelousas Catholic.

North Central cruises past WCA

North Central swept a pair of district games from Westminster Christian Academy.

The Lady Hurricanes won 79-27, while the boys cruised with a 91-28 win.

The Lady Hurricanes started off the scoring onslaught by jumping out to a 28-5 lead after the first quarter and led at half, 47-13.

Floydiece Washington ended the night with a game high 24 points.

"I didn't pull my first team until 5:09 left in the game. Our varsity hasn't played a full game in three games, " North Central head coach Vanessa Taylor said. "We got off to a better start this time against Westminster than we did the last time we played them."

The Lady Hurricanes put their 10-0 district record on the line Tuesday night when North Central hosts Jeanerette.



NC 91, WCA 28

The second game of the evening saw the North Central Hurricanes struggle at first and then explode for a 91-28 victory.

"We played very well on defense. Our defense could not have been better in the second and third quarters," North Central head coach Butch Fontenot said. "When you hold someone to 3 points in one quarter and 4 points in another, that's good defense."

North Central led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, as Jason Comeaux paced Westminster on the scoreboard with 6 points and North Central's Marcus Lewis had 7 points.

North Central outscored WCA 20-3 in the second quarter as the Hurricanes took a 35-14 lead into the locker room at the half.

Randall Bulliard scored a 3 pointer, the only Crusader bucket in the period.

North Central erupted for 25 points in the third period and held the Crusaders to only 4 points.

Jason Comeaux and Patrick Vice each had 2 points for the Crusaders, while Marcus Lewis and Kennard Tanner each scored 8 points for the Hurricanes.

The romp continued in the final quarter as the Hurricanes outscored WCA 31-10.

Lewis led North Central with 11 points in the period and finished with with 27 points on the night.

Comeaux paced the Crusaders with 14 points in the loss.

"We are young and we are going to keep working," WCA head coach John Standiford said after the game. "We won't give up."
