LEBEAU - The North Central Hurricanes defeated the Westminster Crusaders 18-15 in a game that was exciting down to the finish.
The two teams that are not going to the playoffs, battled as though the last spot was on the line.
WCA (2-7, 1-4) attempted an onside kick to open the game, but the was touched by a Crusader before it traveled the neccessary 10 yards.
The Hurricanes (2-7, 1-4) had possession at the Crusader 48-yard line.
North Central took the ball and proceeded down the short field using Chris Cane in just about every way possible. Cane ripped off seven straight runs and then went 24 yards for a touchdown.
Kennard Tanner's PAT attempt was no good and the Hurricanes led 6-0 with 7:11 left in the period.
After a WCA fumble, the Hurricanes drove 58 yards on eight plays to go up 12-0.
Facing a second-and-17 situation, Kenard Tanner connected with Chris Cane for a 24- yard touchdown pass with 3:24 remaining in the first half.
Westminster got on the scoreboard first in the second half as the Crusaders took the opening kick off and drove 73 yards in 13 plays.
WCA kept the drive alive when Matt Prudhomme's ran nine yards as the Crusaders faced a fourth-and-six at the Hurricane's 16-yard line.
On second and goal from the five, Matt Bernard cracked the end zone for WCA with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter.
On the two point conversion, WCA's Jacob Cooley faked the hold and completed a pass to his younger brother Micah Cooley to close the gap to 12-8.
North Central responded, taking the kick off at their 39 yard line and driving 61 yards in eleven plays for the score.
The Hurricanes scored from four-yards out as Chris Cane raced around right end for the touchdown with 11:56 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The North Central two-point conversion pass attempt was no good and North Central led 18-8.
WCA was able to score again as Matt Prudhomme reached the end zone with 4:32 to go in the ball game.
The final WCA scoring drive of the season began when Jacob Cooley returned Kenard Tanner's punt from the WCA 38 to the Hurricane 36 yard line.
Seven plays later Prudhomme scored from one-yard out.
Matt Bernard's PAT was good and North Central led 18-15.
North Central coach Herb Lamb stated, "The keys to our winning tonight was we did not turn the ball over once and we did not give up the big play.
"Both teams fought hard tonight and both teams faced a lot of adversity this year," Lamb continued.
"I am so proud of the 18 kids who stuck it out this season and finished the season with me.
Acting as head coach for the Crusaders John Vice stated, "If you miss tackles against a back like Chris Cane, you will pay for it and we did.
"We had the ball four times in the red zone and only came with only two scores.
"We just didn't put the ball in the end zone when we had the opportunities."
