Special Open House

P. Martel

Parents of North Central High School students were treated to a special Open House on Monday, January 27, 1997. The event was held at 6 PM in the school auditorium. The theme of the program, "Hearts of Excellence", was displayed in front of a large table which had been decorated with red hearts and covered with Mardi Gras beads, and the stage had been beautifully decorated with mini white and multicolored lights in a ball motif by Mrs. Marie Bush.

Mistress of Ceremonies Augusta Rideau opened the program with an introduction of Rev. L.A. Johnson, who gave the invocation. Then followed the Pledge of Allegiance by Lou Ann Rhines, the National Anthem, and the purpose of the assembly by Assistant Principal Willie Haynes.

Our first selection of the evening was the premier appearance of The Twisters, NCHS' first dance team. The group danced to "Give it to Me " by Rick James, and their performance was excellent with a variety of moves which were executed perfectly. Dance Coach Augusta Rideau's many hours of practicing these great routines with these talented young ladies has certainly paid off, and we look forward to seeing more of them in the future.

The second selection of the evening was a Glamour Fashion Show presented by the Family and Consumer Science Department. Mrs. Joyce Hayes' students modeled several colorful informal outfits as well as formal attire which they had designed and sewn themselves. While Tasheta Thomas narrated, the young models paraded and turned across the stage in a professional manner as soft music played in the background. Mrs. Hayes has obviously spent much of her time and talent working with these young designers and models of the future.

Principal Raymond Duplechain brought the program to a close with the Recognition of Honor Students which was highlighted by presentation of academic T-shirts to 4.0 students and bumper stickers to proud parents of NCHS Honor Students. Mr. Duplechain commented that this was all a part of building pride. In his concluding remarks, he exhorted students to continue to strive for academic excellence and to encourage their peers to achieve also.
