Peer Conference on Non-Violence

On January 19, 1996 North Central High, like many other schools in St. Landry Parish, held a peer conference on Violence in Schools. Mrs. Francis LeDay was invited to speak to a representative group of students about resolving conflicts at our school. Group participants represented a cross section of grade levels, interests, and abilities and had been selected by each homeroom teacher. The purpose of the conference was to help students better understand the importance of resolving conflicts in ways other than by fighting.

Mrs. LeDay focused her talk on the facts about violence and how many lives it claims each year. She gave students ideas on how to help solve problems and conducted interesting group activities. Then problems pertaining to the school were discussed.

Plans are for other meetings to be held each month with these same students, helping them them to come to a realization of how important it is to resolve conflicts without violence.
