CBI and CBVI
by Jessica Ryder
At North Central we have a class called CBI (Community Based Instructional) and CBVI (Community Based Vocation Instructional). The teachers of this class are Mrs. Ruby Harrell, Mrs. Judy Dupre, and Mr. Terry Smith. The class is set up to help students learn survival skills that will help them secure a job in the future.
Mrs. Harrel works in the classroom with her students (CBI) on how to take care of the home and how to handle the homesetting properly on their own. They also learn how to iron, set tables, and cook. Some of the students even learn how to make cakes. Mrs. Harrell will be teaching three of her students, Jacinta Joseph, Jeremy Lazard, and Rayford Comeaux, cake decorating. The students are also learning to address their manners at the table and how to interact with others in a formal setting.
On Fridays the class gets together and prepares a meal for a sit down dinner. Sometimes they even invite teachers and staff to join them. Some of the students (CBVI) go out into the community. Mrs. Dupre is going to take several students to Stelly's Supermarket where they will be working in the new bakery department for about three hours each day. Mr. Smith also brings a few of the students to the nursing home.
This class is really focused on helping the students prepare themselves for life on their own. They have come a long way, and they have enjoyed every minute of it.
